1. accessto 有权使用，得到

The system hasbeen designed to give the user quick and easyaccess to the required information.

设计该系统就是为了使用户快速、简便地查询到所需信息。

accession  n. 到达；即位；加入

accessory  n. 附件；配件。adj.辅助的；附属的

2. accordingto 根据

According to the weather forecast, the weatherwill improve soon.

根据天气预报，天气很快会转好。

= in accordance with 按照

3. addto 补助

Have youanything to add to your earlierstatement?

你对之前的陈述还有什么要补充的吗？

addition  n. 增加；加法；附加物

additive  adj. 加添的。n.添加剂

in addition to 除…之外（还）

4.  advocatefor 对…的提倡

Dr. Smith haslong been a practicing pediatrician and anadvocate for children’s rights.

史密斯医生做了很久的执业儿科医师。他倡导儿童权利。

advocation  n. 拥护；支持

5. aheadof 在…前面，领先于

I’m on thewaiting list for a ticket, but there are ten people ahead ofme.

ahead of time 提早

6. ahead of time 提前；提早

Let’s meet forlunch. I’ll call you ahead of timeto fix a time and a place.

我们一起吃午饭吧。我会提前给你打电话确定时间和地点。

= in advance 事先

advance v. 前进

advanced adj. 先进的

7. aim at 旨在

The government’scampaign aimed at influencing publicopinion.

政府的这次运动旨在影响公众舆论。

aim n. 目的；目标

8. along with  连同…一起

Why don’t you takehim along with you when you go?

你为什么不带他一起走

9. arrange for 安排，筹备

The meeting has beenarranged for Wednesday.

会议安排在周三举行。

arrangement n. 安排；约定

在表示“安排某人做某事”的含义时，一般不说arrange sb. to do sth. 而说arrange for sb. to do sth.

10. aside from 除…以外（还有）

I hardly watch anytelevision, aside from news andcurrent affairs.

besides 除了，但是还包括在内

except 除了，但是被排除在外

apart from 除…以外还有…

11. at one’s expense 由某人付费

I treated my friend at my expense.

我请朋友吃了饭。

expensive adj. 昂贵的

expenditure n. 花费，支出，费用。

spending n. 开销，花费

区别： expenses是指开销，花费。一般指平时购物、花钱的开销。

expenditure是指支出，一般用于国家预算中的支出，比较正式和宏观。

spending就指消耗，消费的意思。包含以上两个词所覆盖的含义领域。

12. at random 随机地，随意地

The librarian took a book from the shelf at random.

图书管理员随意从书架上取下一本书。

randomly adv. 随机地

13. attribute A to B 将A归因于B

The doctors have attributed the cause of the illness to an unknown virus.

医生认为这种疾病是由一种未知的病毒引起的。

注意：同学们要注意不要把A与B的方向弄反。

attribute n. 属性；特征

14. at the rate of 以…的速度

The car is going at the rate of 40 miles an hour.

汽车正以每小时40公里的速度进行。

rate n. 比率，速率；v. 估价，定级

15. at the risk of 冒…的危险

He rescued the dog at the risk of his own life.

他冒着生命危险救了那条狗。

16. be aware of 知道，明白

Ishe aware of the price of shoes like those?

他知道那样的鞋很贵吗？

= realize 了解，意识到

17. be absorbed in 全神贯注于

John was absorbed in his thoughts.

约翰陷入了沉思。

absorb v. 吸收，吸引

18. be accustomed to 习惯于

[ə'kʌstəmd]

I’m not accustomed to being treated like this.

需要考生注意的是，to后面接动词-ing形式

19. be acquainted with 熟悉，了解

[ə'kwentɪd]

Students who are already acquainted with one foreign language tend to find it easier to learna new one.

20. be apt to 倾向于，易于，往往

The kitchen roof is apt to leak when it rains.

一下雨厨房的房顶就容易漏水。

= be inclined to通常用人为主语，一般为主观意识觉得的。

= tend to可以用于人、物或事。tend 的名词形式为 tendency(趋势）= trend
